A Very Bookish Murder by Dee McDonald

The third book in Dee McDonald's Ally McKinley mystery series takes place once again in Ally's beloved Locharran where Ally runs a Guest House, is dating the local retired vet and occasionally helps the local police in their investigations.

This episode sees our main characters really settling into their roles. Ally has a number of guests who are attending a writer's retreat and is invited to attend herself. However, the retreat at the local hotel, has barely begun when the star writing tutor Jodi Jones is found murdered in the ladies’ loos.

When Detective Inspector Rigby arrives to investigate, Ally is shocked to see him looking very pale and sickly and when he falls ill, a new detective is sent to take his place. When Detective Inspector Kandahar arrives from Glasgow, he enlists Ally's help in discovering who Jodi Jones really was and which of the attendees of the writing retreat might have had reason to want her dead and whether the murderer might be staying in Ally's own home.

Once again, we meet all the wonderful characters of Locharran including the gossiping sisters at the local store, the septuagenarian expectant father; Hamish, Earl of Locharran and of course Ally's best friend and partner Ross.

This is a cosy mystery that is nonetheless tinged with darkness, a great page turner that will appeal to fans of Anthony Horowitz and Richard Osman.

I was delighted to be asked to review this book as part of the blog tour for A Very Bookish Murder, available now from Bookouture.
