The Windsor Knot by S.J. Bennett

The Windsor Knot has an utterly enchanting premise; it's a murder mystery solved by the Queen of England, so of course I had to know more. A young Russian musician is found dead at Windsor Castle the morning after he had performed at an event. The immediate suspicion is that Russia or rather Putin himself, is behind his killing. Thus begins an extensive investigation by the police and MI5 but behind the scenes and with the assistance of her Assistant Private Secretary Rozie Oshodi, Her Majesty is also investigating. S. J. Bennett brings the characters in this story brilliantly to life. Her Majesty is a delight; alert, intelligent and observant and Rozie; an ex soldier born in Peckham is a perfect companion. The plot is complex and clever and is solved by the Queen who then gently nudges the MI5 boffins in the right direction until they think they've solved it themselves. An absolute page turner and the start of what I hope will be a long running series. Perfect for fans of miss Marple and of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club. Published by Bonnier Zaffre and available from today.
