The third book in Jo-Anne Blanco's Fata Morgana series sees Morgan away from her home attacked and alone. Deep in the forest she must rely on her magic to battle all the various forces working against her as she realises who she can and cannot trust.
The world building is superb, as the various factions are all highlighted in this adventure. Giants, faeries, piskies and muryans are all a threat to Morgan and her friends as she travels away from Tintagel and towards the fortress at Dimiloc.
The book could probably be read as a stand alone adventure but as a third in the series it cleverly shows the changing patterns of loyalty, friendship and religion in post Roman Cornwall. It follows in the grand tradition of fantasy tales such as the Sword in the Stone, placing a young woman with magic and intelligence at the centre of a tale of war, magic and danger.
The large cast of characters and the various place names may be confusing for some readers but a trip to Jo-Anne's website provides a helpful family tree and photographs of the real places that inspired the story. There is also a glossary of words at the back of the book.
A perfect read for fans of fairy tale and Arthurian legend and will appeal to fans of Katherine Kerr, Katherine Roberts and Sarah Woodbury.
